(if some debian-installer developer happens to read this, giving some more information during installation on what it’s actually doing would be appreciated)
[/quote]
Unless I'm mistaken, it should be possible to access another shell (alt + f4, I think) that gives you an idea of what's going on 'behind the scenes'.

Hey Man, suggest to stay on Debian. IMHO Deban stable might have some outdated software(this can be compensated by using unstable repos) but still overall systme is much more stable than Ubuntu.
I've been using both for quite long period of time, but still prefer Debian.

By the way, another difference between Ubuntu and Debian is that on the later the touchpad seems to work better (on Ubuntu I accidentally move the cursor or middle-click-copy-paste quite often, while on Debian that didn't happen at all). Does someone know is there's any difference between them in this regard?

jldugger:
To follow up with that, I could install Jaunty yesterday and the problem happened again; now I'm using a vainilla 2.6.29 kernel from kernel.ubuntu.com and this one is working fine so far. And I'm being ignored again in #ubuntu-kernel; unless someone answers there I'm not going to take any further action (basically because I don't know what I can do, and I have the impression that if I filled a bug I would get ignored there as well).

mich:
I'm running Lenny but I have the repositories for testing, unstable and experimental in my source.list (pinned down to only be used when I specify the "-t <distro>" option, of course). The 2.6.29 kernel is available in unstable as package "linux-image-2.6.29-1-amd64".

Leon Nardella:
Thanks, that seems to be a different problem to what I experienced, though (and I also had it with ext3).

foo:
Thanks for the info about command-not-found, dunno how I oversaw that. Generating the cache now... :).
About the installer, is that weekly snapshot a CD of Debian testing or something? If so, I guess I can try it before installing Jaunty again, but be aware that I'm an awful bug reporter (except when I know what the problem is and provide a patch) :P.

jldugger:
No, as when I had Ubuntu installed I wasn't sure whether it's a bug or my hard disk (and I still aren't, as I find it weird that nobody else has the same problem). I mentioned the issue in #ubuntu-kernel a few times and asked for advice on how to debug it but the developers didn't seem to care (or didn't see it, that might have been on a weekend, but well...).
I intended to try again with the RC and investigate this further but haven't enough time (well, today I have it, but my Internet connection isn't working properly -evil rain killing the WiMAX signal- so I don't know if I'll be able to download it).</distro>

Please test the latest weekly snapshot of the Debian installer and file an installation-report. You might want to suggest Ubuntu give back some of the stuff you found to be missing, I wish you good luck with that. command-not-found is available in sid though.

"I’ll try again with Jaunty once it’s out, and if the problem still happens investigate the issue a bit more (this means, try with a different kernel :P)."

Surely you've made an omission, about how you've filed a bug about this severe regression, and intend to test on Jaunty <b>before</b> it's released to millions of people with a potentially devastating bug?
